Former NBA star Kobe Bryant shared a powerful message to Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward after he fractured his left ankle on an awkward landing while attempting to field an alley-oop during Wednesday night's home opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Hayward was taken off the court on a stretcher.

As Kyrie Irving's game-tying attempt under the outstretched arms of LeBron James fell short in the Cleveland Cavaliers' season-opening 102-99 victory against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night, the two former teammates performed their traditional handshake and embraced on the right wing of the Quicken Loans Arean court. Irving then did the same at halfcourt with several other ex-teammates. Irving, of course, requested a trade this past summer due at least in part to a frosty relationship with James, and he got his wish upon being dealt to the Celtics - the same team that Cleveland met in the Eastern Conference finals this past May.

Three championship appearances, one title and a Game 7 game-winner that will go down in NBA lore would, on an island, warrant a tribute video for Kyrie Irving's return to Cleveland. But for some Cavs players, the manner in which Irving left disqualified

Gabrielle Union is adding "author" to her lengthy Hollywood resume and her husband, NBA star Dwyane Wade is very proud of her latest endeavor. Union's memoir, We're Gonna Need More Wine, was released today, and the Cleveland Cavaliers star shared a sweet congratulatory message for the Being Mary Jane actress on Twitter in honor of the special day.

LeBron James knows about being booed by Cleveland fans - there was more venom thrown his way upon his return to Cleveland after bolting for Miami than Jack Tatum at a Steelers' or Patriots' fans bar. LeBron was apparently justified in his thoughts that the Cavs crowd would be good to Kyrie.

Isaiah Thomas told Sports Illustrated last week that he "might never talk to Danny [Ainge] again." And he sounded pretty bitter about his trade from the Celtics to the Cavs. Now, on the "Road Trippin" podcast with new teammate Channing Frye and ex-Cav Richard Jefferson, Thomas, who is out until at least January with a hip injury, said those comments were misunderstood.

UPDATE, 1:50 PM: The final scores on the court last night saw ex-champs the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Houston Rockets win the doubleheader games of the NBA season opener but now we have the other score, so to speak. Winning the night on cable for TNT, the Cavs' victory over the Boston Celtics and the Rockets triumph over current champs the Golden State Warriors snagged an average of 4.9 million viewers. Or to put in the true dunk context, that's a whooping 53% over the 3.2 million that the 2016 season doubleheader opener of October 25 last year delivered.

The first night of the NBA is here. Tuesday night's opening matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics was of course one of intrigue for many reasons. The NBA likes to open its seasons with matchups like this, and the crowd at The Q in Cleveland did not disappoint when they saw Irving once more.
Wed, 18 Oct 2017 02:00:58 GMT

It was the first game for Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving back in Cleveland against the Cavaliers on Tuesday night. Irving spent the first six years of his career in Cleveland before being traded to the Celtics over the summer. Of course, there was no love lost between the two teams nor between Cavaliers fans and Irving.
Wed, 18 Oct 2017 03:59:59 GMT

Kyrie Irving said Gordon Hayward's sickening injury on debut for the Boston Celtics is one of the worst he has seen as Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James sent his well-wishes. Hayward, 27, fractured his left ankle early in Boston's NBA season-opening 102-99 loss to the Cavs on Tuesday. The All-Star was making his bow for the Celtics after arriving from the Utah Jazz amid much fanfare but it ended it agony after coming down on his ankle as he jumped in an effort to catch a pass during the first quarter.
Wed, 18 Oct 2017 05:29:28 GMT

Gordon Hayward's face was etched in pain and shock. Of all the juicy subplots for this hyped homecoming and a season opener between heated rivals, a serious injury to Hayward wasn't on the list. Boston's season changed in a gruesome instant Tuesday night. Hayward, one of the new Celtics who was going to help them close the gap on Cleveland, broke his left ankle just five minutes into his debut, and Boston was beaten 102-99 on Tuesday night by LeBron James and the Cavaliers. Hayward's horrific injury overshadowed Kyrie Irving's return to Cleveland and re-directed Boston's immediate future and potential. After the 27-year-old was wheeled from Quicken Loans Arena on a stretcher , offering a thumbs-up

Boston's Gordon Hayward broke his left ankle just five minutes into the season, a grisly injury that overshadowed Kyrie Irving's return to Cleveland and the Cavaliers' 102-99 win over the shocked Celtics on Tuesday night. LeBron James scored 29 points -- 13 in the fourth quarter -- in his most extensive action in three weeks because of a sprained left ankle. Irving, who asked to be traded this summer after six seasons in Cleveland, had a chance to tie it with a 3-pointer at the horn but missed.

The 2017-18 season is two games old, and the Boston Celtics have lost both of theirs. One at the TD Garden on Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Bucks, when Giannis Antetokounmpo put up 37 points and looked something like the M.V.P. they think he can be in Wisconsin. As in the loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday, when Gordon Hayward fractured his tibia and dislocated his ankle, horribly, five minutes into the game, Wednesday seemed to be more about Hayward than any action on the court-rightly and understandably so.

LeBron James' new Nike jersey didn't even make it through his first game. It appears Nike has a problem on its back. For at least the third time in three weeks since the start of training camp, one of the company's brand new NBA jerseys has ripped during the normal course of game action, and this time it was the face of Nike in the first game of the entire season on national TV.

The Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors are ready to kickstart this season. Houston traded for point guard Chris Paul in the offseason, giving shooting guard James Harden a threat in the backcourt. Golden State bolstered its bench in the offseason, signing players like Nick Young and Omri Casspi. Now, the Rockets and Warriors will go toe-to-toe on Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. ET on TNT (livestream). The Rockets went 55-27 last season and clinched the third seed in the playoffs, but they lost in the Western Conference semifinals to San Antonio Spurs. It's long been rumored that LeBron James would leave Cleveland for Los Angeles when his contract runs out after this upcoming season. A story published by GQ magazine Tuesday, on opening day of the NBA season, will do little to quell the fears of Cavaliers fans that their star will leave town (again). The article's author, Mark Anthony Green, asked James about an infamous letter penned by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert after the star left for Miami in 2010 (he'd return to Ohio in 2014).

New Boston Celtics star forward Gordon Hayward fractured his left ankle when he was bumped in the air by LeBron James and fell with his leg pinned under him in the first quarter of the NBA's season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. Hayward, 27, who signed a four-year, $128 million contract in the offseason with the Celtics, was trying to convert a lob pass from Kyrie Irving when he and James collided. The team later announced Hayward suffered a fractured ankle.

Stoic Golden State Warriors player Klay Thompson is definitely buzzworthy all on his own, whether he's making paper airplanes during press conferences or signing supposedly lucky toasters. During the Warriors' first game of the season, Thompson's doppelgänger, a YouTube personality known as BigDawsTV, showed up to Oracle Arena clad in a Warriors uniform with Thompson's name and number and effectively stole the show. This isn't BigDawsTV's first appearance as Thompson's lookalike - he attended a game last year during the Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Warriors at Oracle as well.

The 2017-18 NBA season begins on Tuesday, with Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving making a quick return to Cleveland and Houston on the road against defending champions the Golden State Warriors. Irving's trade request and subsequent move to Boston was one of many high-profile switches during the close-season and while the Eastern Conference was a little more subdued than the West, there was still plenty of intrigue. Can anyone unseat the Cavs in the East?

LeBron James wore shoes that say "equality" for the Cavaliers' season-opener against the Celtics. James has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and spoke at length about his social activism at the Cavs' media day. "I will in my voice, I will in my passion, I will in my money, I will in my resources to my youth and my inner city and outside my inner city to let these kids know that there is hope, there is greater walks of life, and not one individual, no matter if it's the president of the United States...can stop your dreams from becoming a reality," James said.

From the second the trade became official, this is how we imagined opening night going down: Kyrie Irving, clad in kelly green for the first time, lining up opposite LeBron James with the clock winding down and the game in the balance. The 2017-18 NBA season opener didn't begin the way anyone expected or wanted, but we did get that late-game showdown ... and it went to the King. The Boston Celtics bounced back from the brutal blow of losing new addition and All-Star forward Gordon Hayward to a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia less than six minutes into the game, weathering that sucker punch and the 18-point deficit that the Cavs built in its aftermath to take a fourth-quarter lead at Quicken Loans Arena.

Despite being without their prized free agent signing in the offseason for all but the first five minutes against Cleveland, the Celtics gave themselves a chance to win down the stretch only to come up short in a 102-99 loss. Gordon Hayward, the Celtics' key free agent signee who was joined by Kyrie Irving on a revamped Boston roster, sustained a gruesome injury going up against the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James and Jae Crowder on an alley-oop. Hayward may miss the rest of his first season with his new team. The Celtics play their home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night, presumably after Hayward undergoes surgery for what coach Brad Stevens said was a dislocated left ankle and broken tibia.

The Golden State Warriors' title defence got off to a losing start against the Houston Rockets, while the Boston Celtics went down to the Cleveland Cavaliers and lost Gordon Hayward to a serious injury. Golden State were beaten 122-121 by Houston, who rallied 34-20 in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's NBA season opener. NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant had a chance to win it on the buzzer and he actually hit a shot to give the Warriors a 123-122 lead, but after further review, the ball was still on the Warriors star's fingertips when time ran out giving James Harden and the Rockets victory.

The Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers brokered arguably the most surprising trade in the offseason. Boston shipped Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn's 2018 first-round draft pick to Cleveland for Kyrie Irving. Now, the Irving-led Celtics will travel to the Quicken Loans Arena to collide with the Cavaliers on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. TNT (livestream) will broadcast the action. Last season, the Celtics won an Eastern Conference best 53 games and clinched the first seed in the playoffs. They lost to the Cavaliers in the conference championship, and they are seeking revenge this season. Boston bolstered its roster in the offseason by trading for Irving, a prolific scorer

As Cavs practice wound down on Monday, Isaiah Thomas lingered, flipping set shots at a rim on the far end of the floor. Thomas is months away from playing, his balky right hip still limiting him, yet his presence at practice underscored an important point: Whatever Cleveland is now, they will be something significantly different when Thomas returns. Kyrie Irving is gone, and a roster overhaul has planted eight new players on a three-time conference champion's roster.

LeBron James chase-down blocked Terry Rozier, then Dwyane Wade blocked Jayson Tatum, and folks, the 2013 Miami Heat are back. This is so good and so fun. These are the bros we all wanted to see play together again. These dudes aren't young anymore, either, but they just blocked a 19-year-old and a 23-year-old, because that is what G.O.A.T.s do. Thank you for this trip to the past, LeBron and Dwyane. Let's see it again and again.

The buzz of the NBA's opening night was killed just a 5:15 into the first game when Gordon Hayward went down with what could be a season-ending ankle and leg injury. The pair also gets into the Nikola Mirotic/Bobby Portis incident in Chicago (this was recorded just before the Portis suspension came down), the LaMarcus Aldridge extension with the Spurs, and if Joel Embiid should be ticked about being on a minutes limit to start the season.

LeBron James has never missed a season opener in the NBA - or at any level. His streak is in jeopardy. James remains questionable for Tuesday night's game against the Boston Celtics and former teammate Kyrie Irving because of a sprained left ankle that has bothered him for three weeks. James, who injured his ankle in practice on Sept. 27 and played in just one exhibition game, participated in the team's morning shootaround but did not speak to reporters afterward. A team spokesman said it will be a game-time decision whether James faces the Celtics and Irving, who was traded to Boston this summer after six seasons in Cleveland. The 32-year-old James took some outside shots but did very little

Tuesday is opening night in the NBA, with the Cleveland Cavaliers facing off against the Boston Celtics, followed by the Golden State Warriors taking on the Houston Rockets. Calling this bout "high-tension" might be an understatement.  In his first regular-season game with his new team, Kyrie Irving has to march back to Cleveland and put on a performance good enough to take down both LeBron James and a hostile crowd.  From a fantasy perspective, seeing how Irving moves the ball and plays off-ball in coach Brad Stevens' system should be intriguing.

LeBron James made it back for the season opener. No surprise. Limited for nearly three weeks by a sprained left ankle that sidelined him in practice and the preseason, James is playing in Cleveland's opener Tuesday night against former sidekick Kyrie Irving and the Boston Celtics. James, who hurt his ankle on Sept. 27 and played in just one exhibition, arrived at Quicken Loans Arena almost four hours before the opening tip to test his ankle and get treatment. After his workout, Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said the 32-year-old told him he would give it a go. "He feels pretty good, so he's going to play," Lue said.
